Family & couples therapy in Vila do Conde
A structured space for families and couples, through moments of conflict, change or crisis. A systemic approach that looks at the relationship as a whole and involves the relevant people in building a solution.
What it is
Systemic therapy looks at people in relationship — family, couple, or other meaningful systems — and seeks to understand the patterns that settle between them. One person's symptom often speaks about the balance of the whole system; working together opens space for that balance to be rebuilt.
The focus isn't on establishing who's right, but on understanding the dynamics that have taken hold, clarifying communication, and giving the family or couple back the ability to function in a more adjusted way. Every situation is unique, and the intervention is built together, at the pace of those who come to us.
When it makes sense to seek help
Difficult communication
Repetitive arguments, misunderstandings, prolonged silences or feeling unheard.
Relational conflict
Patterns of distance, persistent tension between family or couple members.
Crises and ruptures
Moments of deep questioning of the relationship, considering separation or the aftermath of one.
Transitions and change
Birth, separation, remarriage, children leaving home, geographic or professional moves.
Adolescence and parenting
Conflicts with children, difficulty setting limits, dividing tasks, defining routines.
Infidelity
Support following a betrayal, to decide, rebuild or separate with care.
Blended families
Reorganising after separation, creating new rules, roles and bonds.
Grief and loss
Supporting a family or couple through the loss of a loved one and the spaces left behind.
How it works
-
01
First assessment session
Getting to know the family or couple, understanding their history, mapping relationships and clarifying what's driving the request for help. Whenever possible, with all relevant members present.
-
02
Individual sessions (optional)
When warranted, an individual session with each person, to understand each perspective without the filter of the other's presence.
-
03
Setting goals
Together, we define the goals of the intervention — concrete, achievable, and reviewed as the work progresses.
-
04
Regular sessions
Fortnightly sessions, 60 to 75 minutes long. Each session has a focus, and often ends with something concrete to try between sessions.
-
05
Review and discharge
We periodically review progress. When the family or couple regains the ability to manage their own dynamics, we prepare the discharge, with the door always open to return if needed.
Systemic therapy doesn't look for someone to blame
It seeks to understand patterns. The problem is rarely in a single person — it's in how the system organises itself around it. The "side" therapy takes is always the relationship, and the work is collective.
